Hyland to host high school, college students in Hyland Hybrid Hackathon Jan. 6-8

Company leaders will guide participants, part of Hyland’s mission to build and inspire careers in tech

Hyland, a leading content services provider, will host its Hyland Hybrid Hackathon both at the company’s Westlake, Ohio, headquarters and virtually on Jan. 6-8.

The Hackathon started with 55 students in 2015 and has grown since, to nearly 200 students from across the United States registered for this year’s event.

New this year, participants will choose between three tracks based on their development and programming experience and interest. By following these tracks, students can tailor their experience throughout the weekend. Tracks include:

  • Explorer: for students just beginning their software development journeys, who will have mentors to guide them throughout the event
  • Artisan: for students who possess a moderate amount of programming experience and who are interested in design, innovation and ideation
  • Scientist: for students who love the technical details of software projects and who already possess significant programming experience

In addition to Hyland mentors being on site to assist Hackathon participants, Hyland leaders also will serve as judges. They include:

  • Derek Walker, Senior Vice President, Engineering
  • Chrystal Legan, Senior Manager, Sales Engineers
  • Alyssa Levicky, Director, R&D
  • Quinton Robinson, Manager, Software Engineering

“We’re excited to ring in the new year by welcoming these future tech leaders back for our annual Hyland Hybrid Hackathon,” Walker said. “It’s incredibly motivating to witness these bright young minds and their eagerness to deepen their development skills, a key part of our mission to build and inspire careers in the field.”

Hyland Hybrid Hackathon is just one of many Tech Outreach programs Hyland conducts annually. Since 2014, when Hyland’s Tech Outreach efforts began, nearly, 5,000 students have participated in over 150 programs. Over 800 students have attended more than one program.

Other Hyland Tech Outreach events include:

  • Hy-Tech Camps (Summer 2023): For students entering 7th-12th grade who want to explore different areas of coding at a young age  
  • High School Innovation Showdown (Spring 2023): A team competition that tasks students to use their creativity to come up with an innovative concept that could solve a real-world problem
  • Hy-Tech Club: A free, 12-week program for students in 8th-12th grades who want to learn how to code
  • TECH CORPS partnership: Hyland and the Columbus-based collaborate to bring high-quality computer science education to students from elementary school to high school across Ohio
  • Hyland’s STEM program at Cleveland State University’s Fenn Academy, through which Hyland encourages students to pursue higher education in engineering and computer science
  • Youth Opportunities Unlimited PEEKE Internship Program: Hyland’s Tech Outreach team has worked with local high school interns on various software development projects
  • Urban Community School Partnership: Hyland offers a weekly coding class for 6th, 7th and 8th-grade students at the school in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood
  • Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Ohio Summer Career Readiness Program: Hyland has partners with Boys & Girls Club of NEO on its career readiness program
